Daryl Davis, an African-American musician who has played with such icons as Chuck Berry and Little Richard, has an unusual hobby: in his free time, he enjoys meeting and befriending members of the Ku Klux Klan. He also collects robes and other artifacts from some who have left the group and even active members who now consider him a friend, aiming to eventually open a “Museum of the Klan.” Crisscrossing the country to sit with Grand Wizards, neo-Nazis, and other white supremacists, his journey amounts to one of the most remarkable series of interviews ever captured on film—a confounding and often deeply moving investigation of race relations at this heated moment in America’s history. At the heart of his intention is a central question: How can you hate me when you don’t even know me?
