Set in the high plateau of eastern Tibet, Drokpa is a tribute to Tibetan nomads and their struggles with the pressures of modernization. The story is told through the daily lives and relationships of a diverse set of protagonists: Tamku, an 18-year-old single mother who began herding yaks at only 8 years of age; Dhongya, a senior herder who remembers the days before the Tibetan government privatized Drokpa land; and Yithan, a mother of two who encounters modern culture through television and her children.

“One more student, one more piece of virtue,” says Choejor, a former Buddhist monk and the founder of a new school for Thangka art in Rebgong, a village in China’s Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Tibetan Thangka art, painted depictions of Buddhism, has a long tradition in Rebgong. Choejor aims to make Thangka culturally and economically sustainable by both furthering that tradition and upending it, accepting female and ethnic Han students who were historically prohibited from learning the form.
